  1. Use the File menu to
  2.   • Open    • Close   • Print
  3.     text files.
  4.  
  5.   • Get    • Save
  6.      data files, including SPSS system files.
  7.  
  8.   • Set the directory for files 
  9.     named in SPSS commands.
  10.  
  11.   • Quit SPSS.
  12.  
  13. NEW (N)
  14.   Opens a new untitled input window.
  15.   You can have a maximum of 10 input windows.
  16.  
  17. OPEN (O)
  18.   Opens a new input window and loads an
  19.   existing  command file into it.
  20.  
  21. CLOSE (W)
  22.   Closes the active Input window and asks
  23.   whether you want to save it (if there
  24.   are any unsaved changes).
  25.  
  26.   If there is no active input window,
  27.   Close is dimmed.
  28.  
  29. SAVE (S)
  30.   Saves the contents of the active input
  31.   window originally opened or most recently
  32.   saved.
  33.  
  34.   If the active window is untitled,
  35.   Save is dimmed.  Use Save as.
  36.  
  37.   If original contents of the active input
  38.   window came from a file, the current
  39.   contents replace contents of the original
  40.   file.  Do not use Save unless you want to
  41.   replace the contents of the original file.
  42.   To preserve the contents of the original
  43.   file and create a new file, use Save As.

  45. SAVE AS
  46.   Saves the contents of the active input
  47.   window into a new file.
  48.  
  49.   Type the name into the text box in the
  50.   dialog box.

  52. APPEND WINDOW or APPEND SELECTION
  53.   Copies the contents of the active window
  54.   or selected text to the end of a file.
  55.  
  56.   To select the receiving document,
  57.   double-click its name in the dialog box.

  59. GET SPSS SYSTEM FILE
  60.   Gets an SPSS System File, which is a data file
  61.   saved with the SAVE SPSS Sytem File command.

  63. SAVE SPSS SYSTEM FILE
  64.   Saves an SPSS System File.

  66. GET DATA FILE
  67.   Opens a submenu, from which you select the
  68.   type of data file to get.

  70.     SPSS Portable Files

  72.     SYLK Files (such as Multiplan or Excel)
  73.  
  74.     Tab-delimited Files.

  76. SAVE DATA FILE
  77.   Opens a submenu, from which you
  78.   indicate the type of data document to save.

  80. •••Caution:  If you opened a non-SPSS file——
  81.    for example, a spreadsheet file—— 
  82.    do not save the file using its original name.
  83.    SPSS discards information such as formulas 
  84.    and range names when it saves the document. 
  85.    Save the file under a new name.

  87. PAGE SETUP
  88.   Specifies the page format for printing and 
  89.   SPSS output.  If the Output Window is active,
  90.   SET WIDTH and SET LENGTH are automatically
  91.   executed.  Subsequent SPSS commands run with
  92.   the new width and length.

  94. PRINT WINDOW
  95.   Prints the contents of the active window.
  96.  
  97. PRINT SELECTION
  98.   Prints the selected text in the active window.

  100. SET DIRECTORY
  101.   Sets the directory for SPSS commands, so that
  102.   if you enter a filename without a pathname
  103.   in a command, SPSS searches the correct 
  104.   directory. If you do not set the directory,
  105.   a file named without a pathname is assumed to
  106.   be in the SPSS application folder.
  107.  
  108. QUIT (Q)
  109.   Quits SPSS.  You are asked if you want to save
  110.   any unsaved files.
