Use the File menu to
• Open • Close • Print
text files.
• Get • Save
data files, including SPSS system files.
• Set the directory for files
named in SPSS commands.
• Quit SPSS.
NEW (N)
Opens a new untitled input window.
You can have a maximum of 10 input windows.
OPEN (O)
Opens a new input window and loads an
existing command file into it.
CLOSE (W)
Closes the active Input window and asks
whether you want to save it (if there
are any unsaved changes).
If there is no active input window,
Close is dimmed.
SAVE (S)
Saves the contents of the active input
window originally opened or most recently
saved.
If the active window is untitled,
Save is dimmed. Use Save as.
If original contents of the active input
window came from a file, the current
contents replace contents of the original
file. Do not use Save unless you want to
replace the contents of the original file.
To preserve the contents of the original
file and create a new file, use Save As.
SAVE AS
Saves the contents of the active input
window into a new file.
Type the name into the text box in the
dialog box.
APPEND WINDOW or APPEND SELECTION
Copies the contents of the active window
or selected text to the end of a file.
To select the receiving document,
double-click its name in the dialog box.
GET SPSS SYSTEM FILE
Gets an SPSS System File, which is a data file
saved with the SAVE SPSS Sytem File command.
SAVE SPSS SYSTEM FILE
Saves an SPSS System File.
GET DATA FILE

type of data file to get.

Tab-delimited Files.
SAVE DATA FILE
Opens a submenu, from which you
indicate the type of data document to save.
•••Caution: If you opened a non-SPSS file——
for example, a spreadsheet file——
do not save the file using its original name.
SPSS discards information such as formulas
and range names when it saves the document.
Save the file under a new name.
PAGE SETUP
Specifies the page format for printing and
SPSS output. If the Output Window is active,
SET WIDTH and SET LENGTH are automatically
executed. Subsequent SPSS commands run with
the new width and length.
PRINT WINDOW
Prints the contents of the active window.
PRINT SELECTION
Prints the selected text in the active window.
SET DIRECTORY
Sets the directory for SPSS commands, so that
if you enter a filename without a pathname
in a command, SPSS searches the correct
directory. If you do not set the directory,
a file named without a pathname is assumed to
be in the SPSS application folder.
QUIT (Q)
Quits SPSS. You are asked if you want to save
any unsaved files.
